Being in flow
Thursday Video -talking from my woodland
If you prefer to read, here is the transcript
Hi, it's Dr Denise and I'm in my wood. I've been here for four hours with my 80-year-old friend Guy, and we've been working hard. We didn't stop - we didn't even have a cup of tea! He's just had to go now because he needs to get home, and you know sometimes you just keep going because you're in flow.
I've spoken about flow before - when you just don't notice the time, you're just enjoying it. There's something special about physical work on a bright day. It's about 8 degrees, so it's not too cold, and it's quiet. There's no chainsaw, the birds are singing, I've seen a couple of deer go running by, and I've just been walking my land. It's the most wonderful feeling to be here, in my wood, alone, doing physical activity. I don't need to go off to the gym or do anything else because I've been pushing my wheelbarrow through the wood, and it's been fun.
It just makes me think - what is it that you do for fun? Is it mentally stimulating? Is it physically engaging? What is it? I think sometimes we feel that fun has to be something organized and involving other people, but fun can be whatever we make it. When thinking about getting older, sometimes we have less physicality. We can't do certain things, and that's why I'm doing as much as I can for as long as I can. Actually, I think the more physical stuff I do, the more it's going to keep me physically well. And I think that's just such an important thing.
I think I need to do more of these short little videos from the wood. I actually have a selfie stick I use sometimes, but I haven't got it with me today because I'm just wandering around with my knife, wheelbarrow, and gloves. The branches and everything are dirty, and if you saw what I look like - my trousers and jumper and everything are dirty, but who cares?
Anyway, I just thought I'd drop a short message and just say hi. Nothing was properly organized, but sometimes you just want to hear a moment of something. So until next time, it's Dr Denise down at the Wood. Bye.
